Here’s what a real assessment actually buys you, and why each of these eight things compounds into something bigger than the sum of its parts.
I once worked with a client whose favorite interview question was, "sell me this pen." They'd hand the candidate a pen and expect them to eloquently regale them with the benefits of owning a 25 cent Bic. Listen, if they can convince you to buy a cheap pen, they can schmooze their way through the interview without every revealing potentially risky characteristics.
That's where a valid and reliable candidate screening assessment comes in. It will help you take a deeper dive under the surface of the AI-generated resume and the nice suit. Here are 8 reasons why.
Instead of guessing what a “great” employee for a role looks like, you can build a Performance Model based on the traits of the people already succeeding in it. Take your top performers’ assessment results, use them to define the target attributes, and suddenly you’re not hiring on a hunch, you’re hiring against evidence pulled straight from your own organization.
This matters more than it sounds like it should, because most hiring managers carry around an unspoken, unverified idea of what “great” looks like for a role, usually shaped by their own personal characteristics or preferences. A Performance Model isn’t a machine for producing identical employees, and I want to be upfront about that because it’s a common (and fair) worry. You don't want cookie-cutter employees. Afterall, diversity is the spice of life!

Will this protect me legally, or expose me to more risk? Used correctly, a validated, standardized assessment is one of the more defensible parts of your hiring process, not a liability. The key is using it as one input among several, never as the sole basis for a decision.
Is this realistic for a small business, or just for large companies with HR departments? Genuinely realistic for small businesses, even if you're just making one hire, and arguably more valuable there, since a bad hire hurts a 12-person company far more than it hurts a 12,000-person one.
Do candidates resent being asked to take an assessment? Most don’t, especially once they understand it’s a two-way street. A well-designed candidate experience includes explaining why you use it and sharing a their results with them as part of the onboarding process.
What if my gut has been right for years? It probably has been many times, but the few times you were off could have been real killers. The goal isn’t to replace your instincts, it’s to give them better information to work from.
