I’m a huuuuuge Dolly Parton fan! Even if you didn’t see her 1980’s movie, 9 to 5, you surely know the song:
Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’
Barely getting’ by, it’s all takin’ and no given’
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you craxy if you let it
Sorry…I know you’ll be singing that song all day now.
Those song lyrics are more relevant today than ever. Employers haven't figured out how to make work any better than it was in 1980. I see it every day when I am working with clients trying to figure out how to make the changes necessary to attract and retain talent in today's market.
Sure, you might find some relief in your hybrid work arrangements, office happy hours, and “unlimited” PTO. But, the truth of the matter is, as Dolly sings, “they let you dream just to watch ‘em shatter.”
People often ask, “Amy, how do I create a thriving business like yours?” I tell them there are 3 success factors when it comes to starting a training, coaching, or consulting business.
First, it takes a customer who wants to buy. You really can’t have a business without customers.
Second, you need a product that you can deliver in a way that knocks their socks off. I bet you have lots of ideas and with your knowledge and experience, you could pull something together pretty quickly.
It's the third success factor that I find holds most people back. That’s their own lack of courage. Too often, self-doubt and that not-good-enough feeling paralyzes you. It keeps you from taking action.
I understand how you feel. My knees were more than shaking when I quit my corporate job over 20 years ago. I had a toddler, a baby on the way, and I was the primary bread winner for my family. I had no clients lined up and had no idea what products I was going to sell…probably not the best way to launch. But, you know what? Within 3 months I had my first clients and was on track to replace my monthly income.
Over the years, my products have evolved based on what I love to do and what my ideal clients need. And, I’m still a little nervous. I think I always will be and that’s okay. A bit of nerves keeps me on my toes. It keeps me listening to my customers. It keeps me learning. But, I know what I do works and if I stay the course, it will continue to work in the future.
So, what’s standing in your way of taking the leap to start your own training, coaching, or consulting business?
Is your heart telling you that it’s time to leave that 9-to-5 job, but the butterflies in your stomach are holding you back?
If so, get my mini-course: Jump Start Your B2B Business. In just an hour, you’ll identify your ideal client, define a product that you can quickly launch, and most importantly, tell those butterflies to fly away, leaving you with the courage to take action today!
